On May 25th, 2020, George Floyd, a 46 year old black man, was gruesomely murdered for no reason but his skin color. A police officer’s knee to his neck, he pleaded for air for 8 minutes and 46 seconds to his death. “I can’t breathe.” Even once Floyd was motionless and without a pulse, the officer mercilessly kept his knee on him. Onlookers were prevented from intervening, but one of them filmed this great injustice and abuse of power, which resulted in an anti-racism uprising around the whole world, demanding justice for Floyd and all black people, for the racism they endure not just from the police but in all sorts and kinds.
On October 10th, 680, Hussain Ibn Ali, a 55 year old man, was also gruesomely murdered. He was, as the protestors for the Black Lives Matter movement are, fighting injustice which was prevalent in the Muslim society by their tyrant Caliph Yazid. Hussain, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad and who was to be the next Caliph, was forced to defend for his life and the livelihood of Islam with 72 of his companions against Yazid’s army of tens of thousands, known in Muslim-Shia history to be 30,000. Grossly outnumbered, the companions defended themselves and God’s message to their agonizing deaths and the last man standing was Imam Hussain. Weakened by dozens of wounds and extreme thirst, as he and whoever was with him were denied water for three days in the scorching hot desert of Karbala, he was attacked to the ground. Shimr, Yazid’s military commander, jumped atop Hussain’s chest to suffocate and behead him from vein to vein. “For the sake of my grandfather, I am thirsty.” Instead of being filmed, his sister Zainab witnessed and endured the tragedy, and went on to tell his story. Today, up to 25 million people visit his grave on Arba’een, the 40th day after his passing, as protest of his murder and belief of all he stood for.
1400 years later and we are still fighting against the injustices Imam Hussain sacrificed his life for, of them being abuse of power and racial discrimination. We will continue Imam Hussain’s legacy and preserve God’s message of peace. We will honor Imam Hussain’s sacrifice. George Floyd’s death, and the many deaths alike his, will not go in vain. May God bring peace upon the whole of humanity; may he bring justice to all those who suffered as George Floyd did.
O people! We have created you from a male and a female and made you into nations and tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the most honorable of you with Allah is that [one] who is pious to Allah. Indeed, Allah is Omniscient, All-Aware. [The Holy Quran- 49:13]

The Islamic faith rejects all racial, political, ethnological, tribal, geographical, economic, intellectual, cultural, social, and military segregations and places piety to God as the standard for distinction between virtues and vice.
Prophet Muhammad said, "O people, your Lord is one and your father (Adam) is one. There is no favor of an Arab over a foreigner, nor a foreigner over an Arab, and neither white skin over black skin, nor black skin over white skin, except by righteousness. Have I not delivered the message?"

Be free
“If you do not have a religion or do not fear the hereafter, then be free in this world.”
The statement above was cried by a free man in the face of the fortresses of darkness and oppression during the Battle of Karbala. Imam Hussain cried trying to reason with the unreasonable, the ruthless. He explains that if you do not believe in a religion that stops you from committing such act of savagery, or if you do not believe in the day judgment where righteousness and falsehood carry heavy weight, then be free in this world. To do as you see right regardless to any external pressure. Click here for more
