Martyrs of Ashura
Abu Al-Fathl Al-Abbas
Abbas, Imam Hussain’s brother, is revered for his loyalty to his half-brother Hussain, his respect for the Household of Muhammad, and his role in the Battle of Karbala. Abbas's loyalty to Hussain was so great that Abbas didn't drink water even when he got the chance to, although he was extremely thirsty, because he could not bear the thought that the children, women, companions and Imam Hussain were thirsty as well. |
The essence of this event was to illustrate that Abbas conquered the Euphrates River, held it with his mighty hands, yet still did not drink. After gathering the water, Abbas rode back towards the camp. On his way back, he was struck from behind, and one of his arms was amputated. Then he was struck from behind again, amputating his other arm.
Abbas continued, carrying the water-bag in his mouth. Yazid's army started shooting arrows at him. One arrow hit the bag and water poured out of it. Immediately after the bag of water was hit, the enemy shot an arrow at Abbas and hit his eye. One of Yazid's men hit his head with a mace and Abbas fell off his horse without the support of his arms. As he was falling, he called, "Oh brother!” calling for Hussain. Abbas fell on his face before he let the water fall. He was killed on Friday, 10th of Muharram, 61 AH, near the bank of the Euphrates River.
Habib Ibn Muthaher
He was a loyal and close friend of the Prophet Mohammed, and was originally from the tribe of Bani Asad. During the afternoon in Karbala, Habib Ibn Muthaher came to Imam Hussain and said, "My Master, Hussian, allow me to go to the battlefield. Let me sacrifice my life for Islam." Ultimately, Imam Hussain gave him his permission. |
Imam Hussain mounted his friend, Habib, on the horse. Habib Ibn Muthaher rode into the battlefield. He fought bravely but was then over-powered. Imam Hussain rushed towards him. Habib looked at Imam and said: "Oh grandson of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (SAW), please forgive this humble servant for not being able to give more than his unworthy life for you and Islam." Imam Hussain took Habib in his arms and cried, "Oh my friend! Oh my friend!" Habib died resting his head on Imam Hussain’s shoulder. Later a soldier of the enemies came over and cut off his head. All the martyrs of Karbala had their heads cut off, but Habib's was the first to be cut off by the enemy, his head was tied to a horse and pulled along the land of Karbala.
John, The Slave
John Ibn Jowey was a servant to Abu Thar Al-Ghifary, a close companion of Imam Ali. He returned to Medinah, Saudi Arabia after Abu Thar was banished by the third caliph and became loyal to the Ahul-Albait (the household of the prophet Mohammad). He was in the service of Imam Ali, Imam Hassan, Imam Hussain, and Imam Ali Ibn Al-Hussain. He came to Karbala with Imam Hussain and was responsible for fixing and preparing the swords and various other weapons. |
He fought on the battlefield of Karbala with Imam Hussain courageously, loyally and dauntlessly until his very last breath; he was later killed by the enemies. The Imam then sat beside his departed body and prayed to Allah for him.
Al-Qasim son of Hassan
Al-Qasim was in his teens. In the single combat, he prevailed over several renowned warriors including the renowned Syrian, al-Arzaq and his brothers. When the enemy made a general attack with all his might, Al-Qasim fought with great courage and the ferocity of his attack scattered the enemy whom he pursued right into the midst of Yazid’s army. Sa’d bin Urwa bin Nufeil, a vile soldier of Yazid, hid himself and when Al-Qasim passed in pursuit of the fleeing soldiers he attacked him from behind so ferociously that Al- Qasim fell off his horse. The enemy, seeing Al-Qasim lying on the ground, regrouped and attacked him. Hearing Al-Qasim’s cries, Abbas, Ali ِِِAl-Akbar and Imam Husain rushed to rescue him, but the hoofs of horses of the retreating forces of Yazid trampled him badly. When Al-Qasim bent to mend his shoe, the villainy spirit which was represented by Azdi began to control him. This is what Hameed bin Muslim meant when he narrated the following: Umar bin Sa'ad bin Nufayl Azdi said, “I have the desire to |
attack him”. I said, “Glory be to Allah! Why so? This army which has surrounded him from all sides will surely kill him”. He said, “By Allah! I shall attack him, and I will make his mother weep over him”. He attacked him while the child was fixing his shoe and before he could turn his face towards him, he dealt a blow upon his head with his sword and slit it.
The child fell down on his face upon the ground and called out, “Peace be up on you, O dear uncle! Come to my aid”. Then I saw Hussain standing at the head of Qasim, who was stretching his feet upon the ground. Imam Hussain said, “By Allah! It is hard upon your uncle that he could not come to your aid when you called him, or he answered but it could not benefit you”. Then Hussain said said: "By Allah! Here he has numerous murderers while his aides are quite less”.
Imam Hussain leaned down to Al-Qasim and held him to his chest, embracing him, and took him towards the camp. Whereas at this influential scene Imam Hussain bent and bent down, Al-Qasim’s feet were drawing lines on earth, but why? Was it because he was taller than Imam Hussain? No, but because the misfortune of losing of Al-Qasim, foiled the morale of our Imam.
Imam Hussain arrived to the tent and lay him down in the tent of the martyrs. Then he said,” O cousins, patience on death! You won’t see any mortification, after this day, alas!”.

Hurr Bin Yazid
Hurr Bin Yazid was one of the elite of Kufa who became a companion of Imam Hussain and was martyred in Karbala. He was a nobleman and a Muslim warrior. At first, he was the commander of a part of the enemies' army in Karbala, and then he regretted his action, changed side and joined the camp of Imam Hussain. After joining the righteous side, he fought bravely and defensively until the enemies martyred him on the tenth day of Muharram. He is regarded as the symbol of hope in repentance and its acceptance that leads to eternal salvation. |
Ali Al-Akbar
Ali Al-Akbar the son of Imam Hussain was born on the 11th of Shabaan 44 AH. He was a handsome young man of eighteen and a brave soldier. He had been taught fencing and archery by his half-uncle, Abbas son Ali. He sacrificed his life at Karbala for the lofty principles of Islam as mentioned in "Ziyarah Al-Nahiyyah" and Ali al-Akbar was killed by Murrah bin Munqiz bin Noman al Abdi. |
At only eighteen years of age, he asked for permission to battle from his parents and aunt, Zainab. Their position was hard, how could sending your eighteen year old son to battle until his death, trying to protect his father and the message he holds, be easy? But their love for God and commitment to the message the prophet Mohammad carried was stronger than anything else. Ali Al-Akbar mounted his horse and headed to the battlefield, only to find his father Hussain following him. After halting and asking his father why he was joining him, Hussain replied: "I wish to see you for as long as I can, my dear son." And so, Ali Al-Akbar continued to the battlefield, looking back at his father every few seconds.
He fought bravely once he reached the battlefield, killing a lot of the enemies. But while a few soldiers were attacking him, another crept upon him and thrust a spear into his chest. The spear penetrated his chest and the handle broke, leaving the sharp blade in his pure heart.
