Lady Hamida

Lady Hamida’s father, Muslim Ibn Aqeel, was dragged to the top of the governor’s, Umar bin Sa’ad, castle to be killed and just before they were about to strike him, Muslim called out, “Peace be upon you Father of Abdullah (Imam Hussain)!” At that moment the man struck Muslim and beheaded him.

The news reached Imam Hussain and it was extremely difficult for him because not only was he suffering from the loss of a great companion but he had to inform a child, Hamida, that her father had passed away. Which will also be difficult for the delicate child since she loves her father and was expecting to see him on the way to Karbala. Imam Hussain turns around towards Lady Zainab and tells her, “To God we belong and to Him we shall return.” Lady Zainab replies and says, “O’ Father of Abdullah ( imam Hussain), what is it ?” “Muslim ibn Aqeel has died,” Imam Hussain said so, Lady Zainab responded, “O Father of Abdullah to God we belong and to Him we shall return.” Imam Hussain looked at her and told her to bring Hamida, Imam Hussain’s niece, the daughter of Muslim Ibn Aqeel.

Hamida came towards Imam Hussain and he pat her on her head. She looked towards Imam Hussian and asked, “Father of Abdullah have I become an orphan today?” Imam Hussain told her, “O Hamida, why do you ask?” She replied, “Because normally when you pat the head of a child it means that they’ve become an orphan at that moment.” Imam Hussain spoke and said, “O’Hamida, my daughters are like your sisters and and my sons are like your brothers, O’ Hamida,  I’ve just heard about the news of your father’s death in Kufa.” As soon as the Imam announced this Hamida started to weep. As soon as the girls saw Hamida weep they came towards her, one of them was Ruqayyah which was too young, she hugged Hamida and Hamida told her, “In Sham, when you saw your father’s head, who was there to come and hug you?” Then the other girl, Sakeena, came and told Hamida, “Do not worry, now that you have become an orphan I will be the one to look after you.” Hamida replied, “Sakeena, who was there to look after you when Imam Hussain’s horse returned without the Imam?”  Lady Zainab also came to comfort  her  and Hamida said, “Zainab, who was there to comfort you  when they [ the enemies ] attacked your hijab [ Viel ]?”

When all the daughters of imam Hussain were prisoners in Kufa, Tawa’a , the lady who had seen Muslim ibn Aqeel, saw all the daughters walking in the streets of Kufa, thus she came towards them asking about Hamida. They asked why and Tawa’a said that she has a message from her father before he died. She went to Hamida and said, “O’ Hamida, I have a message from your father before he died.” Before she could say anything Hamida asked, “O’ Tawa’a before my father fell on the ground did anyone carry his body before it touched the floor of Kufa? Did anyone  burry his body? Did anyone protect my father’s body?”
