Imam Hussain
Who is Hussain?
Hussain is Prophet Muhammad’s grandson and the son of Lady Fatima Al-Zahra’a and Ali bin abu Abu Talib (PBUT).
He is the third successor of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH&P) and the reason his message reached us today (The Prophet’s God-appointed successors are known as Imams). If it weren’t for Hussain, the enemies of the Prophet Muhammad would have destroyed Islam.
What happened to Hussain?
On the tenth day of the Islamic month, Muharram, Hussain, his family and his companions sacrificed everything they had in their struggle against tyranny and oppression in order to uphold the human values of truth, justice, and liberty of thought, word and deed. They were beheaded, tortured, and brutally hurt. Hussain fought a battle against Yazid (an enemy of Islam) on that day with only 72 on his side while facing thousands. Despite the incredible efforts made by Hussain, he was defeated in battle and battle only, as the true victory is in the hereafter. His companions in battle were all brutally killed and his remaining family members were tortured in ways no human is able to endure. They have all suffered great pain and great loss for God and his message through the Prophet Muhammad, and if it weren’t for them the message of Islam wouldn’t have reached us the way it beautifully has.

Why do people still mourn him, 1400 years later?
When Hussain was a newborn, the prophet Muhammad carried him and was seen to be weeping with his daughter Fatima. Prophet Muhammad said that they were crying over Hussain’s death, as he would be brutally murdered after the entire household had passed away. He also said that their true followers and believers would mourn him for generations to come.
This is also the reason we come to our Lady Fatima every year on the 40th day after Hussain’s death, to pay our respect to her over his martyrdom.

How do people mourn Hussain’s martyrdom?
1400 years later, people still mourn Hussain and in countless ways. Some have sittings of prayer and grief upon the beginning of the month of Muharram, others go all the way to Iraq to visit Hussain. Some people go to Iraq on foot, walking from all ends of the Earth to assemble in one point and for one reason, the love of Hussain and pledging allegiance to him. |
